A challenge that many travel agents face is not knowing how to connect the dots between Kerala's various destinations. Understanding the transport infrastructure helps you build itineraries that flow logically.
Air Connectivity
Kerala has four international airports: Cochin (Kochi), Thiruvananthapuram, Calicut (Kozhikode), and Kannur. Kochi is the most connected and serves as the primary gateway for most tourists, both national and international. Direct flights operate from Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, and major Gulf cities. Calicut and Kannur primarily serve the NRI traffic from the Middle East.
Train Connectivity
The Konkan Railway and Indian Railways connect Kerala's major cities to Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, and Chennai. Trains like the Rajdhani Express to Ernakulam (Kochi) and the Kerala Express to Thiruvananthapuram are well-known routes. Train travel between destinations within Kerala, such as Kochi to Alleppey or Kochi to Thrissur, is comfortable and scenic. For budget travelers, trains are a good choice for inter-city travel.
Road and Internal Connectivity
Kerala's road network is reasonably good along the main tourist corridor. Self-drive or private cab hire is the most practical way to move between Kochi, Alleppey, Munnar, Thekkady, and Kovalam. Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) buses connect to most towns, but for tourist clients, a dedicated cab is strongly recommended for comfort and flexibility.
