Umiam Lake, located near Shillong in Meghalaya, continues to attract travellers for its scenic setting surrounded by hills and greenery. Popularly known as “Barapani,” the lake was developed in the 1960s as part of a hydroelectric project and is among the largest artificial reservoirs in Northeast India. It also holds cultural significance, with local Khasi folklore associating its name with a story of loss and emotion.
