The Netherlands has built the Maeslant Barrier, featuring two massive gates, each 210 metres wide, to protect Rotterdam and surrounding areas from North Sea storm surges. Built between 1991 and 1997, the barrier closes automatically when dangerous water levels are forecast. The gates fill with water and sink into position within about two hours, shielding Zuid-Holland from flooding. The structure is part of the country’s wider Delta Works flood-defence system.
