Chile’s Atacama Desert, one of the driest places on Earth, has burst into bloom after unusually heavy rainfall linked to a strong El Niño. Millions of dormant seeds and bulbs have awakened, covering around 17,000 square kilometres with colourful flowers. More than 200 plant species are involved in the rare “Desierto Florido” phenomenon, expected to be the most extensive since 1997. The spectacular bloom is attracting tourists and photographers.
