Swiss glaciers have lost nearly 20% of their ice volume over the past five years, with 2026 recording a 5.5% decline alone. Record heatwaves and unusually low winter snowfall accelerated the melting, while some glaciers lost several metres of thickness. The rapid retreat could affect water availability, hydropower and Alpine tourism. Scientists say the findings highlight the growing impact of climate change on Switzerland’s iconic mountain landscapes.
