India’s domestic tourism is increasingly driven by religious travel, accounting for 48% of overnight trips, according to a government survey conducted between July 2025 and June 2026. Uttar Pradesh ranked as the most visited destination, followed by Tamil Nadu and Rajasthan. Health and medical travel recorded the highest average spending, while buses remained popular among rural travellers and trains among urban visitors. Overnight travel frequency also increased compared with 2014–15.
