Religious travel accounted for 47.7% of India’s domestic overnight trips during July 2025–June 2026, according to the government’s Domestic Tourism Expenditure Survey. Health and medical travel represented 29.6%, while holidays, leisure and recreation accounted for 22.1%. The figures show pilgrimage remains the biggest driver of domestic overnight travel across both rural and urban India.
