Archaeologists have uncovered at least 2.5 kilometres of previously hidden pre-Hispanic roads near Machu Picchu using LiDAR laser scanning. The network includes a 1.2-kilometre main trail with a distinctive zigzag design attributed to Inca engineering. The discovery is helping researchers understand how ancient communities travelled through the rugged landscape surrounding the famous citadel and could reveal more about the region’s wider road network.
