The Department for Transport (DfT) has announced that Greater Anglia, West Midlands Trains, and Govia Thameslink Railway will transfer into public ownership by mid-2026. The staged transition begins October 2025 and completes May 2026, covering 8 in 10 journeys overseen by the DfT. The move supports the creation of Great British Railways, aiming for all passenger services to return to public ownership by 2027, without incurring extra taxpayer costs.
