Jaisalmer is a medieval city in the heart of the Thar desert, and is referred to as the ‘City of Gold.’ It is called the ‘City of Gold’ because of the structure across the city are built from yellow sandstone. The Jaisalmer Fort stands out prominently on top of the hill, and behind its massive walls is the King’s Palace. Jaisalmer was an important trading center during the medieval times and was founded by Rawal Jaisal in 1156 AD. The name Jaisalmer means the Hill Fort of Jaisal.
